Gold Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 1 Gold top tube

Minimum Testing Volume = 3mL Serum

Tubes must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in gold top tube. Specimen must be collected, processed, aliquoted and frozen within 30 minutes of collection. If unable to meet these requirements, patient must be referred to the outpatient laboratory in the hospital for collection.

Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

Laboratory Staff Instructions: Keep whole blood at room temperature and separate serum within two hours of collection by centrifugation. Transfer serum to a polypropylene tube suitable for shipping (screw cap).

Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis, gross lipemia, received room temperature, received refrigerated >48hrs, gross icterus.

Stability: Whole blood not separated within two hours of collection, refrigerated sample, frozen serum thawed before it reaches testing site. Serum at ambient temeratures for > 24 hours.

Transportation: Send sample to core lab on ice as soon as possible.
