Container Type = 24 hour urine bottle with 25 mL 6N Hydrochloric Acid

15mL 6N HCl is recommended for children less than 5 years old.

Minimum Testing Volume = 10 mL urine from mixed urine Collection

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: 24-hour urine collected in a polyethylene container with 25 mL 6N Hydrochloric Acid. It is important that the urine is refrigerated during the collection. The pH of the urine must be between 2-4. Restrict caffeine, nicotine and alcohol 24h prior to collection. Discontinue Methyldopa (Aldomet) at least 5 days prior to collection. Write your "start" and "end" date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition.

Lab: Instructions: Ensure sample containers is affixed with the corrosive and poison stickers before issuring to patients. Collection instructions which can be obtained from paradigm, must be handed to patients with the specimen container. State 24 hours volume and collection date and time in comments.

Stability: stable for 1 month refrigerated at 2-8°C and frozen for 90 days.

Transportation: Send sample to SMH core lab as soon as possible.

Sample Rejection Criteria: Leaking or unlabeled specimen.
