Specimen HandlingThe following must be done within 30 minutes of collection. Pyruvate needs to be ordered with Venous Lactate and the results has to be > 2.4 mmol/L to qualify for pyruvate testing. If the results is less than 2.4mmol/L then cancel test and enter "Lactate results is < 2.4 mmol/L" as reason for cancellation. Add 300 µL of heparinized whole blood/CSF to an eppendorf tube containing 300 µL of cold 6% Perchloric acid (located in Hematology yellow acid cabinet). Perchloric acid needs to be cooled down first in order to be used. That is why it is imperative that collection of the sample is co-ordinated with the floor. Vortex for 30 seconds and keep on ice for 5 minutes Spin down at 11,000 rpm Transfer supernatant to a tube and send sample frozen. |
