Lavender Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 2 Lavenders

Minimum Venous Volume = 2 Whole Blood (EDTA)

Tube must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in EDTA tube. Protect specimen from light at all times during collection and processing. Sample should be well mixed at time of collection to prevent platelet clumping. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

Laboratory Staff Instructions: Whold blood. Do NOT spin sample. Specimen must be labelled inside and outside light-protecting wrap. Hematocrit must be provided to allow calculation ofresult.

Stability:
Acceptable: Whole blood (EDTA preferred, heparin acceptable). Must provide a hematocrit result. Frozen samples may be accepted if hematocrit is provided. Specimen must be protected from light.
Unacceptable: i) Other anticoagulants; ii) All samples without a hematocrit will be reported as Not Performed; iii) Clotted specimens.

Transportation: Transport at room temperature within 1 hour of collection.

Sample Rejection Criteria:Lipemic, Not protected from light, unlabeled inside/outside light cover sheet, or samples of non sufficient quantity.

Porphyrin reference values are not available for individuals 17 y and younger.
