Green Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 1 Green Top (Li Hep)

Minimum Testing Volume = 6 mL Whole Blood

Tube must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

  • Lavender top is also required for hematocrit result.
  • Specimen Handling

    Collection Instructions: Collect sample in green top tube (Li Hep) and Lavender top for hematocrit. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

    Laboratory Staff Instructions: Specimen must be labelled properly. Send whole blood, do not spin sample. Store and send cold. Provide hematocrit for calculation of result

    Rejection Criteria: Gel-separator tubes, Unlabeled or Not Sufficient Quantity samples will be rejected.

    Stability:
    Acceptable: Heparinized whole blood (green top), maintained at 4C for no more than 2 weeks. EDTA (mauve tube) may be accepted. Must provide a hematocrit. Frozen samples may be accepted if hematocrit is provided.
    Unacceptable: i) Other anticoagulants; ii) All samples without a hematocrit will be reported as Not Performed.

    Transportation: Send sample to core lab as soon as possible.
