Specimen HandlingCollection Instructions: 24-hour urine collected in a polyethylene container with 25 mL 6N Hydrochloric Acid. It is important that the urine is refrigerated during the collection. The pH of the urine must be < 4.0. Foods rich in serotonin (bananas, avocados, eggplant, pineapple, plums, tomatoes, hickory nuts and molusks) and medications that may affect metabolism of serotonin must be avoided at least 72h before and during collection of urine for 5HIAA. Write your "start" and "end" date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition. Lab: Instructions: Ensure sample containers is affixed with the corrosive and poison stickers before issuring to patients. Collection instructions which can be obtained from paradigm, must be handed to patients with the specimen container. State 24 hours volume and collection date and time in comments. Stability: stable for 1 month refrigerated at 2-8°C and longer frozen. Transportation: Send sample to SMH core lab as soon as possible. Sample Rejection Criteria: Urine collected without acid, leaking specimen or pH > 5.0 |
