Lavender Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 1 Lavender (EDTA)

Minimum Testing Volume = 3.0 mL plasma

Tubes must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect in 1 lavender top tubes (EDTA). Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

Laboratory Staff Instructions: Separate plasma within 6 hours of collection. Store and send frozen. If the specimen thaws it is unsuitable for analysis.

Rejection Criteria: Thawed samples. Serum and heparinized plasma samples are unacceptable.

Stability: Sample stable refrigerated for 4 hours and frozen for 30 days.

Transportation: Transport on ice to core lab as soon as possible.

0.10 - 0.40 µmol/L

Values up to 2.0 µmol/L are not uncommon in patients with renal
failure or systemic disease without evidence of Vitamin B12 deficiency.
