Iron (Iron, Iron Saturation, TIBC)

Gold Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 1 Gold Top (SST)

Minimum Testing Volume = 2mL serum

Lithium or Sodium Heparinized plasma is acceptable

Tube must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

Specimen Handling

Collection instructions: Collect blood in Gold or red top without gel separator. Lithium or Sodium Heparinized plasma is acceptable. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition.

Laboratory Staff Instructions Separate from cells within 2 hours of collection. Do not use samples that have been stored at room temperature for longer than 8 hours.

Rejection Criteria Multiple freeze/thaw unacceptable, grossly hemolyzed, unlabeled or samples of non sufficient quantity.

Stability: Stable at room temperature for 8h, refrigerated for 1 week and frozen at -15°C or lower for 1 month.

Transportation: Send sample to core lab as soon as possible.

Iron Male: 9 - 32 umol/L

TIBC: 42 – 72 umol/L
