Lavender Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 2 Lavenders

Minimum Venous Volume = 6 mL Whole Blood

Capillary - BD microcollection tube; Minimum Testing Volume 500µL.

Please Note: A full draw is required for both tubes.

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in 2 lavender tops and send to core lab. Sample should be well mixed at time of collection to prevent platelet clumping. CBC and morphology must be done on all samples requested for hemoglobin electrophoresis. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label. Requisition must specify that test requested is for α-Thalassemia screen. If not, please confirm with ordering clinician.

Laboratory Staff Instructions: Register test as HBEL and put "α-Thalassemia Screen" in comment.

Stability: Stable at 1–8°C for 7 days.

Transportation: Transport at room temperature within 1 hour of collection.

Sample Rejection Criteria: Plasma, clotted sample, unlabeled and samples of non sufficient quantity.
