Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in a lavender top and send to core lab. Sample should be well mixed at time of collection to prevent platelet clumping. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

Stability: Stable at room temperature for 1 day, refrigerated for 7 days, and frozen for 90 days.

Transportation: Transport at room temperature within 1 hour of collection.

Sample Rejection Criteria: Plasma, clotted sample, unlabeled or samples of non sufficient quantity.

Do not order HBA1C within 60 days from previous result.

Diagnostic Cutoffs:

Normal: < 6.0%

Prediabetes: 6.0 - 6.4%

Diabetes: ≥ 6.5%

Glycemic Targets:

Type I Diabetes, pediatric <= 7.5 %

Type II Diabetes, all ages <= 7.0 %
