Container Type = Sterile screw-capped transport tube

Preferred volume to collect: 1.0 mL Body Fluid

Minimum Testing Volume to collect: 0.5 mL Body Fluid

Neonate volume to collect: 0.5 mL Body Fluid

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collected in EDTA vacutainer tubes or sterile urine containers (plastic containers with clot activators such as the Hemogard plastic red top must be avoided for body fluids because the clot activator significantly interferes with the differential count). Sputum specimens are NOT analyzed in the Haematology laboratory. Ensure sample is mixed adequately. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition.

Stability: Stable within 4 hours of collection at room temperature. If testing cannot be completed within 4 hours, specimens must be stored at 2-8°C.

Transportation: Transport at room temperature within 4 hours of collection.
