Donath-Landsteiner Test (Paroxysmal Cold Hemoglobinurea, PCH)

Red Tube with thin top Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 3 Red Tops

Minimum Venous Volume = 3 x 6 mL Red top specimen (Red Top)

Tube must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in 3 Red Top tubes and maintain at 37°C in a thermos filled with warm water. Requisition must have ordering physician, phlebotomist signature, collection date and time. Please include diagnosis, transfusion and pregnancy history included if applicable. Requires Medical Director approval. Call Transfusion Medicine (ext. 5084).

Specimen must be received in transfusion medicine lab by 12:00 PM, business days only.

Stability: Stable at 37°C for 2 hrs.

Transportation: Use thermos with warm water (37°C) to transport specimen in biohazard bag to TM as soon as possible Must be delivered to TM by 12:00, business days only.

Sample Rejection Criteria: Grossly hemolytic, icteric or lipemic specimens. Unlabeled and/or mislabeled specimens. Incomplete TM requisitions. Not received at 37°C, Incomplete TM requisitions.

Required Documentation

Ensure requisition is complete with ordering physician name and phlebotomist signature, date and time of draw.
