Blue Tube Lavender Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type: EDTA vacutainer tube (Lavender) and Sodium Citrate vacutainer tube (Blue).

Minimum Venous Volume: 1mL whole blood for each EDTA and Sodium Citrate tube

Pediatric Minimum Testing Volume (Pink Microtainer tube): 250µL whole blood.

Container Type: Blue Tube (Sodium Citrate).

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: If platelet clumping is suspected for a patient, collect and send both an EDTA and a sodium citrated tube for CBC testing (Please Note: Do Not order a separate CBC order for the sodium citrate sample). Both samples should be well mixed at time of collection to prevent platelet clumping and HAND DELIVERED to Haematology Laboratory within 15 mins of collection. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label. Attach the accession label (with the barcode) on the EDTA tube for CBC and the duplicate accession label (without a barcode) onto the sodium citrate tube.

If only a Sodium Citrate tube is received only platelet results will be reported.

Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

Stability: 15mins of collection at room temperature.

Transportation: Transport at room temperature within 15mins collection.

Sample Rejection Criteria: Plasma, clotted sample, unlabeled or samples of non sufficient quantity.
