Specimen Type / Requirements Container Type = Sterile, screw-capped transport tube or CSF tube. Preferred volume to collect: 1.0 mL CSF Minimum Testing Volume to collect: 0.5 mL CSF Neonate volume to collect: 0.5 mL CSF Tube 1: Cell count (Can share with cytology) Tube 2: Glucose and protein, Oligoclonal Banding Tube 3: Gram stain and culture (C+S) or Virology Tube 4: Cell count or CSF Flow Cytometry.
Specimen Handling Collection Instructions: Collect appropriate volumes of CSF in sequential order into four sterile, screw capped tubes consecutively numbered 1 to 4; Label container and requisition with patient information and specimen source. Maintan sterility. Specify which tube number to run test on. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label. Laboratory Staff Instructions: Enter date and time collection in the LIS. Specify sample number in order comment. Stability: Stable for 1 day at 15-25°C, at least 7 days at 2-8°C and for 6 months at -20°C or lower temperature Transportation:  Send to lab immediately for specimen processing.  Do not send via the pneumatic tube system. Do not refrigerate.  Do not leave specimen on the reception counter; give directly to laboratory staff.  CSF specimens with CJD and other infectious requests: follow Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and  Unity Health Toronto protocols.
