Specimen HandlingCollection Instructions: Whole blood samples collected in heparinized syringes. Sample should be venous. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition. Note: A specimen should never be transferred from a tube to a syringe, or tube to tube as there are different chemicals in different tubes. This process certainly should not be used for blood gases as it also introduces air and lead to incorrect results. The Phlebotomy Team does not collect venous blood gases from patients. Laboratory Staff Instructions: Enter date and time collection in the LIS. Analyze as quickly as possible preferably within 30 minutes of collection at room temperature. Rejection Criteria: leaking sample, uncapped, unlabeled, too much air in syringe, needle attached to syringe. <Stability: Stable at room temperature for 30min. Transportation: Send sample to Core Lab as soon as possible. If there is any expected delays of > 30 minutes place sample on ice. |
