Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect Sample in a sterile container. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition.

Special Instructions Serum or heparinized plasma free from hemolysis collected with or without gel separator. Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection

Rejection Criteria: Unlabeled, Leaky or Not Sufficient Quantity Samples will be rejected.

Stability: Fluid Bilirubin is stable for 4 hours at room temperature protected from light, refrigerated for 1 week and for 6 months at -15°C to -20°C.

Transportation: Send sample to core lab as soon as possible.

Reference Value

No reference range established for fluids. Pleural fluid to serum bilirubin ratios are expected to be <= 1.0 and should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical findings
