B-Hydroxybutyrate (Beta Hydroxybutyrate, BHB, Ketones)

Gold Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 1 Gold Top (SST)

Minimum Testing Volume = 2mL serum

Tube must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

Note: BHB is known to be the single best indicator of ketones in diabetic ketoacidosis,
and explains why most laboratories have moved away from serum ketone testing,
and directly measure beta-hydroxybutyrate instead.

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in gold top (SST) tube. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

Laboratory Staff Instructions: The test is now done in-house. Sperate as soon and possible.

Rejection Criteria: Grossly hemolyzed, lipemic, Unlabeled or Not Sufficient Quantity Samples will be rejected. Avoid repeat freeze/Thaw cycles.

Stability: Stable refrigrated for 14 days 2-8°C and frozen at or below -20°C for more than 14 days.

Transportation: Send sample to core lab as soon as possible.

Reference Value

Pediatric(0-18 years): 0-0.29 mmol/L

Adults: 0-0.42 mmol/L

>2.0 mmol/L is suggestive of ketoacidosis
