Red Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 1 Red Top

Minimum Testing Volume = 3 mL Serum

Tube must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in red top tube. Avoid gold top (SST). When evaluating for possible toxicity, sample should be drawn 4-6 hour post-ingestion. Collect a second sample three to four hours later. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label or requisition.

Laboratory Staff Instructions: Separate samples from cells as soon as possible. Repeated freezing and thawing of samples should be avoided.

Rejection Criteria: Gel separator, unlabeled or not sufficient quantity samples will be rejected.

Stability: Stable At room temperature: up to 24 hours. Refrigerated at 2-8°C: up to 7 days. Frozen at -20°C: up to 180 days

Transportation: Send sample to core lab as soon as possible.

Reference Value

Abnormal: > 66 µmol/L

Interpretation: Potentially toxic acetaminophen level depending on clinical context and time since last ingestion.
Please refer to Rumack-Matthew nomogram if applicable (i.e., in suspected single acute ingestion).

Critical: > 660 µmol/L

Interpretation: Suggests toxicity in patients presenting ≥6 hours following single acute acetaminophen ingestion.
Please refer to Rumack-Matthew nomogram.
