Gold Tube Specimen Type / Requirements

Container Type = 1 Gold Top (SST)

Minimum Testing Volume = 0.5mL serum

Tube must fill to at least ½ or greater of its vacuum capacity.

Specimen Handling

Collection Instructions: Collect sample in gold top (SST) tube. Write your initials, date and time of collection on the collection label.

Laboratory Staff Instructions: Specimen must be labelled properly. Separate as soon as possible and store refrigerated.

Rejection Criteria: Unlabeled or samples non-sufficient quantity. Avoid repeat freeze/Thaw cycles.

Stability: Stable up to 1 week when stored 2 - 8°C or frozen (≤ -20°C) for up to 2 months.

Transportation: Send sample to core lab as soon as possible.

Reference Value

0.84 – 2.18 g/L

< 0.8 g/L - Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency likely. AAT phenotyping indicated if not previously tested.
0.8 – 1.0 g/L - Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency should be considered. Suggest AAT phenotyping if not previously tested.
1.0 – 1.5 g/L - Low-normal AAT does not completely exclude alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, especially if tested during an acute phase response.
If CRP is elevated, and AAT deficiency is suspected, suggest re-testing when acute phase response has resolved.
