Pregnancy & Nursing

Due to the use of radiation used, nuclear medicine tests are not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. Unborn babies have a greater sensitivity to radiation than children or adults, depending on their stage of development. If you are pregnant or think that you may be pregnant, you must inform the technologist before the test is started. Upon consultation with our nuclear medicine physician we may cancel the examination and possibly suggest an alternate test, modify the procedure, or modify the dose of radiation given for the examination. Additionally, most tracers will be expressed in breast milk. Nursing mothers may undergo nuclear medicine tests, but breastfeeding should be discontinued for a specific time period depending on the radiopharmaceutical used. Please consult with the technologist regarding breastfeeding.
