Clinics & Inpatient Care Units
Renal Services - Hemodialysis
The hemodialysis program is a part of Diabetes Comprehensive Care. The range in modalities includes conventional dialysis, daily dialysis, home and nocturnal dialysis, conventional acute dialysis and continuous veno-venous hemodialysis (CVVHD). Patients enter our program through referrals from pre-dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, family physicians, emergency, the transplant program or other dialysis centres.
More than 220 patients receive hemodialysis treatments in our unit. Safe and successful hemodialysis is a highly technical process involving sophisticated equipment and resources. The dialysis unit becomes like a second home to many patients, who come three times per week for an average visit of five hours. We perform approximately 30,000 dialysis treatments every year.
For acute specialized treatments, the clinical technology department operates five continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) machines. We also use hemodialysis machines with portable water purification equipment (WRO-95) for acute treatments outside of the unit.
