Audiology

Audiologists are hearing care professionals regulated by the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario. Our audiologists have a master’s degree in Communication Sciences and/or a doctorate degree. Audiologists assess hearing loss type, severity and determine the need for hearing aids and assistive listening devices. Hearing assessments are covered under the Ontario Health Insurance Plan. A physician’s referral is not mandatory when booking your appointment.

If interested in purchasing hearing aids at St. Michael’s Hospital, a hearing aid evaluation appointment is required. A fee is associated with this appointment. During this appointment, the audiologist determines the most appropriate type and level of technology and provides you with a hearing aid prescription. If interested in filling your prescription, the hearing aids can be ordered through our department and fit accordingly to your hearing loss.

The government does subsidize hearing aids through the Assistive Devices Program, or ADP. Ontario residents qualify for the ADP grant every three years. Enquire about the ADP grant during your hearing aid evaluation appointment.

Our Audiology team includes:

Albert Zhao (Master of Science, University of Washington)
Melissa Reekie (Master of Science, Dalhousie University)
Sean Smith (Master of Science, Dalhousie University and Doctor of Audiology, Salus University)
