Equipment

Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre

The chart below highlights some of the equipment available for use in the simulation centre.

Equpiment Description Commonly used in
Simulation Mannequins
SimMan 3G and SimMan

Operator controlled mannequins that can breathe, speak, have palpable pulses, audible heart and breath sounds and respond to medications.

SimMan 3G is a more advanced wireless model with eyes that open and close, pupils that react to light, can bleed, perspire, cry and seize.

Used in various hospital settings/scenarios such as the operating room, intensive care unit, Emergency Department and patient room

Commonly used in the simulation operation room theatre and simulation theatre

SimNewB™ and SimBaby

These mannequins represent babies from newborn to about 3 months old. They can breathe, cry and coo. They also have palpable pulses and variable breath sounds. They are commonly used with multidisciplinary teams for resuscitation scenarios or with singular groups for recertification processes

SimNewBTM is the newborn and more advanced mannequin. He can move all limbs, turn cyanotic, have seizures, and has an umbilical cord for line insertion with fluid feedback.

Commonly used in the simulation theatre for infant resuscitation simulation. The room can be transformed into labour and delivery suite, a patient room or a neonatal resuscitation room.

Harvey cardiopulmonary simulator mannequin

Performs simulation of cardiac and related pulmonary disease conditions. Based on the selected cardiac pathology, Harvey is able to adapt by changing signs and symptoms like; blood pressure, heart sounds, heart murmurs and other cardiovascular system changes. The trainees are able to learn the techniques involved in examining a cardiac patient like auscultation, palpation and looking for abnormalities in order to be able to make a diagnosis of the selected underlying cardiac condition

Commonly used in the skills lab and simulation theatre

Procedural Simulators (Task Trainers)
CPR Mannequins (head & torso)

These mannequins are designed for basis life support training (CPR & AED use)

They can be used for airway training (intubation, emergency airways)

Typically used by the basic list training (BLS) team located in the BLS room in the hospital, but can also be moved to any location in the simulation centre.

Airway Management Trainers (head and airway)

The intubation trainer is used for teaching airway management and intubation techniques with laryngoscopes, endotracheal tubes, laryngeal mask airway, combitube and other auxiliary aids for airway management

Commonly used in the skills lab and debriefing room

Blue Phantom

Part task trainer used for ultrasound guided central line insertion

Commonly used in the skills lab

MegaCode Kelly

A full body mannequin made for ACLS and BLS training

Commonly used in the BLS program room in the hospital

Virtual Reality Simulators
LapSim®

A virtual reality simulator for training on laparoscopic skills and techniques used in general surgery, OB/GYN and urology

Commonly used in the simulation operation room theatre and simulation theatre

Urology simulator

Used in the simulation of percutaneous and cystoscopy urology procedures.

Commonly used in the skills lab, but can be moved to other locations such as the simulation theatre or debriefing room

AccuTouch endoscopy simulator

Used for simulation of bronchoscopy, gastrocopy and colonoscopy procedures. The simulator provides hands on learning with the three unique scopes and a virtual reality experience. It provides several learning modules with different patient scenarios.

Commonly used in the skills lab, but can be moved to other locations such as the simulation theatre or debriefing room

Additional Minimal Invasive Surgery Simulation Equipment

Storz laparoscopy towers and box trainers with built-in 30 degree scope, light source and monitor

Used for learning a wide range of laparscopic skills and tasks used in general surgery, OB/GYN and urology laparoscopic procedures

Commonly used in the skills lab

Simulation operating room laparoscopy equipment

Used for a wide range of laparoscopic skills and tasks used in general surgery, OB/GYN and urology laparoscopic procedures

Commonly used in the simulation operating room theatre and skills lab
